These Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings were cooked in my Power Air Fryer Oven. It's a great way to cook fried chicken wings without the extra grease or calories that you would get from a deep fryer. They are extra crispy and coated with a delicious wing sauce.

This lucky Jersey Girl has another appliance to test in my kitchen. I am loving it and one of the main reasons is that my husband and teenage son love it too. They have been making batches and batches of these air fryer wings.

Why use a Power Air Fryer Oven?

There are many reasons to like the Power Air Fryer Oven. The oven is versatile, simple and many recipes can be prepared quicker than with a traditional cooking process. It works as an air fryer, rotisserie oven and dehydrator. I have not used it as a dehydrator yet but plan to try that soon.

The simple design and pre-set cooking functions are perfect to have my teenager do some cooking. This appliance fits perfectly on my countertop even though I was concerned about space before I received it. And the best chicken wings are made without deep frying!

Sunday is for football, food and Buffalo chicken wings at our house. Since the Power Air Fryer Oven arrived, my son has taken the initiative to make his own wings. He cooks the chicken wings while I make the finishing sauce. The wings are coated with seasoned salt and flour before they are cooked. My son places them in the oven and most of the work is completed.

If you've never made chicken wings before, read my guide on purchasing and preparing chicken wings including how many to serve per person.

Chciken wings that have not been cut or cooked.

    Ingredients Needed

    • Chicken Wings – If using whole wings, remove the tips and separate the flats & drummettes. You can also purchase pre-cut wings.
    • Seasoned Salt – Liberally season the wings with your favorite seasoning salt blend or you could also just use salt and black pepper.
    • Flour – Coat the wings in flour for a nice crust. Omit the flour or use cornstarch as a gluten-free alternative.
    • Hot Sauce – Use your favorite sauce such as Frank's Red Hot Sauce.
    • Maple Syrup – No pancake syrup, please. Just real maple syrup. You can also substitute honey.
    • Butter – Melt butter and cool slightly.

How to Cook Air Fryer Chicken Wings

    1. In a medium sized bowl, mix together the salt and the flour. Toss the wings in the flour mixture so they are lightly coated.
    2. Spray the racks or air fryer basket liberally with cooking spray. Add the wings and place into the air fryer. Cook at 375 degrees F for 25 minutes turning half way through cooking. After 25 minutes adjust the heat to 400 degrees F and cook for about 5 more minutes or until the wings are as crispy as you like them.
    3. While the wings are cooking, mix together the hot sauce, maple syrup and melted butter.
    4. Remove the wings from the oven when they are crispy and cooked through. Toss with the sauce. Serve with blue cheese dressing if desired.

    Recipe Tips

    • Fresh wings are preferred. If using frozen wings, thaw them completely before proceeding with the recipe.
    • If you purchase whole wings, remove the wing tips and separate the flats and drummettes.
    • For crispy chicken wings, dry the wings on paper towels before tossing them with the seasoning.
    • Place chicken wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
    • For the best results and super crispy skin all over, turn the wings halfway through the cooking time.
    • This air fryer chicken wings recipe will also work for whole chicken breasts but you will need to adjust the cooking time accordingly.
    • Always cook chicken to an internal temperature 165 degrees F when checked with a meat thermometer.
    • Serve buffalo wings with celery sticks, carrot sticks and blue cheese dressing.
Floured chicken wings on a rack in the Power Air Fryer Oven before being cooked

    Variations/Substitutions

    • Gluten Free – To make these wings gluten free you will need to omit the flour or replace it with gluten free flour or cornstarch.
    • Swap The Seasoning – You can season the wings with your favorite seasonings or dry rub from BBQ shake to ranch powder to Cajun seasoning. You can even mix and match.
    • Sauce – A buttery Buffalo wing sauce is a classic option and everyone has a favorite wing sauce. You can toss them with your favorite or dip them in ranch dressing or bbq sauce. Lemon pepper wings and garlic parmesan are also popular flavor options.

    FAQS

How long do these Air Fryer Chicken wings take to cook?

These chicken wings are cooked in 30 minutes and come out super crispy! If you want, you can rotate the racks halfway through cooking but it is not necessary if you put both racks as far in the middle slots of the oven as you can.

What type of sauce is used on these crispy chicken wings?

Once the crispy wings are fully cooked in the Power XL Air Fryer oven, they are tossed in a combination of melted butter, hot sauce and maple syrup. It's the sweet and spicy combination that we love. Our favorite sauce is this one, however, the wings can be tossed in whatever sauce you like.  I also serve the Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings with blue cheese dressing. This is a perfect recipe on any game day. In fact, my family loves chicken wings so much, that I created a Buffalo Chicken Flatbread with Bacon that is like Buffalo wings on a pizza.

What else can you cook in the Power Air Fryer Oven?

I plan to use the Power Air Fryer Oven to make more chicken wings but also many other recipes. I think I might need to try my Baked Buffalo Cauliflower in my air fryer next. I have made many vegetables like asparagus and eggplant in this air fryer instead of using my oven. They are super healthy and GOOD!  See more air fryer recipes below.

You show the air fryer oven but the recipe is for the fryer XL not the oven. What is the difference between the two

Hi Robert. The Power Air Fryer Oven is the latest model so the instructions are similar for all models. The main difference is in sizes and the oven has more features than the other models have.

My air fryer oven does not have a basket so do I cook the wings on the mesh shelves?

Yes, Joan. The mesh shelves are perfect. Spray them with a little cooking spray so the wings don't stick.

I have been wondering the same thing. I just got my Power AirFryer Pro Plus today and am curious which turns out better and how many wings I could put in the rotating basket.

I don't use the rotating basket for wings but I'm sure you could. I would make sure they are spaced out and secured tightly.

Hi Lesley. Yes, I would thaw the chicken first to get the wings extra crispy. To thaw them quickly, do it in the microwave or in a pot of cold water then dry them with paper towels.

I’m using my power air fryer pro oven right now for the first time, cooking wings! I’m praying they turn out. When you say “ turn them over half way thru and cook for another 8 min” is this after the first 25? Or half wY through the 25-turn them, then finish the time before doing another 8? I’m confused sorry lol

        Hi Jen,
Cook them for 12 minutes, then turn over and cook for another 12 minutes. Then cook for 8 more minutes.

        Good luck,

This confused me to. after you turn over cook for the 12 mins do you turn over again and cook for 8 mins or just turn the one time and cook a total of 20 mins(12+8=20) after turning???

It depends what air fryer you have. But to make things simple cook for 20 - 25 minutes at 400 (turning once in the middle of cooking). You can cook more or less depending on how crispy you want them.

I just received a PowerXL air fryer for Christmas. I want to try cooking wings in it. If I use more than one rack (as I would need to for the entire 3 lbs of wings), do I need to rotate the racks during cooking - or just cook as instructed?

It's not necessary to rotate the racks if you try and keep them both in the middle slots but for more even crispiness, that is a good idea. Have fun with your new air fryer!

You can leave out the flour if you'd like and just use seasonings but I have not had trouble the flour cooking enough. If you want the wings extra crispy, just cook them for a few minutes longer. Good luck!

Do you pour sauce on after they are done? Or do you brush sauce on for the last 8 mins? Red Hot hot sauce has a delicious wing sauce Stingin Honey Garlic! Is your calorie count for 4 pieces?? Seems awfully high if air fryer is to help cut calories. Is that calorie amount including the sauce?

        Ann Marie,
I toss the wings with the sauce in a big bowl after they are done. You can put them back in the air fryer if you'd like but I don't because the wings are hot enough already. Also this recipe is for 3 pounds of chicken wings and serves 4 so that is about 7 to 8 wings per person. I am going to write some notes or a new post on chicken wings per pound eventually so thanks for asking!
