Ingredients
- Butter – I uses salted butter as the base for the sauce. You can use unsalted butter but may need to add additional salt for flavor.
- Hot Sauce – My preference for this recipe is Frank's RedHot Original or Texas Pete but you can substitute your favorite brand of hot sauce.
- Garlic Powder – Garlic powder adds a subtle depth of flavor, infusing the sauce with a hint of aromatic garlicky goodness without overpowering the other key ingredients.
- Black Pepper – A touch of freshly ground black pepper provides a mild spiciness and enhances the flavor of the sauce.
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
- Step 1: Melt the butter in a saucepan along with the hot sauce. Add the remaining seasoning and bring to a simmer.
- Step 2: Cool the sauce and use in your favorite recipes or store in a glass jar in the fridge for later use.
Hint: Use a wire whisk to blend the sauce while it heats. This will help prevent the melted butter from separating as the sauce cools.
Variations
- Honey – Add in 1-2 tablespoons of honey for a sweet and spicy buffalo sauce. You can also use maple syrup.
- Extra Spicy – To make the sauce spicier, increase the amount of hot sauce or add a bit of cayenne pepper.
- Smoky Sauce – Stir in a bit of smoked paprika and a dash or two of liquid smoke for a smoky buffalo sauce.
Storage
Store the prepared sauce in an airtight jar or lidded container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
Top Tips

- Whisk the sauce well to emulsify it.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer but do not boil.
- Cool before storing.
