A wooden spoon scoops a portion of the best French fry seasoning from a bowl.

Homemade French fries are good. Really good. Seasoned French fries are great!

You've probably noticed the best restaurant French fries are coated with more than salt. Several popular chains have secret seasoning blends, but this homemade potato seasoning is just as flavorful and super simple to make. Now you can enjoy perfectly seasoned fries at home.

This seasoning blend is salty, garlicky, herby and has just the right amount of heat. Sprinkle on fresh homemade or frozen French fries, sweet potato fries, baby potatoes and potato wedges and you'll never want to eat fries any other way.

But don't stop with fries. The best French fry seasoning is an all-purpose seasoning that you can add to burgers, chicken, chicken wings, vegetables and more. It's so good, there is no wrong way to use this French fry seasoning blend.

    Ingredients

Ingredients needed for this easy fry seasoning recipe.
    • Garlic Salt – If you don't have garlic salt, use garlic powder and add salt to taste.
    • Paprika – For a smoky flavor, use smoked paprika instead.
    • Italian Seasoning – Italian seasoning is a blend of oregano, parsley, basil, and other spices. You can add these spices separately if you prefer.
    • Onion Powder – Onion powder as a mild onion flavor. If you don't like onion, you can omit this.
    • Black Pepper – Freshly ground black pepper will have the best flavor.
    • Cayenne Pepper – Adjust the amount of cayenne to taste. Add more for a spicier blend or use less for a milder potato seasoning.

How to Make the Best French Fry Seasoning

    1. Combine all spices in a small bowl and mix until fully combined. Use immediately to season fries or potatoes or store in an airtight container in the pantry for up to 6 months.

Hint: Start with fresh spices for the best flavor. The spices in your pantry should be replaced every 6-12 months.

    A spoon stirs fry seasoning.

    Variations/ Substitutions

    • Salt Free - Use garlic powder in place of garlic salt and omit any additional salt to make a salt free seasoning blend.
    • Smoky - Use smoked paprika instead of regular paprika.
    • Spicy - Increase the amount of cayenne pepper. You could also add crushed red pepper flakes.
    • Vary the seasoning - Use onion salt or celery salt in place of garlic salt for a different flavor profile. The best part about this easy French fry seasoning is that you can check your spice rack and use your favorites or personal preference.

    Storage

Store this potato seasoning in a glass jar or airtight container with a lid for up to 6 months. Store out of direct sunlight and avoid humidity when storing your seasoning.

    Top tips

    • Make this potato seasoning with fresh herbs and spices. Replace jars of spices that are older than 6 months.
    • Add additional dried herbs and spices such as parsley, oregano, basil, thyme or smoked paprika.
    • This makes an awesome seasoning that can be used on potatoes cooked in a skillet, Instant Pot, Air Fryer, or oven.
    • If you prefer, you can blend all the ingredients into a spice grinder to make them into a powder.
    • Mix the seasoning blend with oil to make it easier to stick to the potatoes.
    • Easily double or triple the recipe to make enough to give as gifts.
    • Add the best french fry seasoning to mason jars or decorative jars with lids.
    • It’s important to store this seasoning in an area without high humidity as this will cause it to clump or harden.

    FAQ

How much homemade French fry seasoning should I use?

This potato seasoning recipe makes about 3 tablespoons of seasoning. Use about 1 tablespoon of seasoning for enough fries to serve 4 people. Each batch of seasoning will season three batches of fries.

How do I season homemade fries?

Frozen french fries and deep fried fresh fries should be seasoned as soon as they are done cooking while they are still hot. To season fresh potatoes, coat raw potatoes with olive oil and add the seasoning. Cook using your favorite method whether that be the air fryer or oven.

What's the best way to store French fry seasoning?

I like to store seasoning in glass jars. You can purchase spice jars with shaker lids that make dispensing the seasoning incredibly easy. Keep your spice jar out of direct sunlight for the best shelf life and flavor.

This is a great seasoning! We've been using it on our fries and I'm definitely going to try it with roasted potatoes next time I make them.
