Crispy, crunchy french fries at home are totally attainable when you learn how to cook frozen french fries in an air fryer. The simple process is quick and doesn't require a ton of extra oil so you can enjoy your favorite snack or side dish with less guilt.
French fries are my weakness. They're a favorite with the rest of the family too, so I always have a bag or two of frozen fries in the freezer. The problem is, baking them in the oven is often hit or miss, and deep frying them at home makes a big mess. Plus who needs all that extra oil?
Since french fries go with so many meals, I make them at home at least once a week. They are also the perfect snack because they satisfy my cravings for crunchy, salty food. Air fryer frozen french fries to the rescue.
The air fryer is my favorite tool for making french fries at home. I don't need to add a ton of oil, yet they are hot and crispy just like the deep fried fries I get at a restaurant or crispy fries made in a deep fryer.
Ingredients Needed
- Frozen French Fries – Use any brand or style of frozen fries. You may need to adjust cooking time depending on the shape and thickness of the fries.
- Olive Oil – Or use your favorite light, neutral flavored vegetable oil.
- Salt – Add as little or as much salt as you like.
How to Cook French Fries
- Toss the fries in a large bowl with the olive oil.
- Add the fries to your air fryer basket or rack. Cook the fries at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, toss the fries a couple of times, and cook them for another 8 to 8 minutes or desired crispiness.
- Add salt to taste while they are hot. Cool for a few minutes then serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Cooking Tips
- Place the fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket for the best results but don't fill the basket more than ¾ full. If using an air fryer oven with a rack, spread the fries out and make sure there is space in between for air to circulate.
- Cook in batches if necessary.
- Shake the basket or turn the fries halfway through the cooking time.
- Increase the cooking time for crispier fries.
- Cooking times may vary slightly for different brands of air fryers.
- Using a bit of oil gives you better results and super crispy french fries but you can eliminate the oil if you prefer.
Variations
- Add Your Favorite Seasonings – While there isn't much more satisfying than salty fries, homemade fries are like a blank slate. Season them using garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, chili powder, Old Bay or taco seasoning or your favorite blend of herbs and spices. I also make a homemade French fry seasoning which is excellent on these fries or really any type of potato.
- Use cooking spray instead of oil – You need oil to get that golden brown color and deep-fried crispy taste you love in your favorite fast food french fries but you can get by with using cooking oil spray in an air fryer. Thanks to the circulation of hot air, air frying gives you crispy fried without deep frying. You can eliminate the oil completely if you prefer.
- Choose the Best Frozen French Fries – Whether you want traditional fries, curly fries, sweet potato fries, steak fries, shoestring fries, waffle fries or even air fryer potato wedges, the cooking process is the same. Simple adjust the cooking time for different types of fries. Thicker fries will need more time.
- Make Them Cheesy – Top your fries with parmesan cheese or your favorite melted cheese blend for delicious cheese fries. Or dip them in a cheese sauce.

My kids love French fries and we serve them with Panko Chicken Nuggets , Homemade Fish Sticks, grilled steak and so many other entrees. You can't go wrong when making these as an easy and quick potato side dish.
A bowl of ketchup is the standard when it comes to dipping french fries. BBQ sauce and ranch dressing are also popular, but you can really go all out when it comes to your favorite dipping sauce. Try one of these great recipes or add your favorite sauce.
