Chocolate Candy Cane Pretzels

Wow, Christmas is in three weeks. So let the holiday treat making begin! Normally I don’t make a lot of sweets but the holiday season is an exception. I love to make homemade gifts for teachers, neighbors and friends.  The treats do not have to be complicated and chocolate covered pretzels are usually loved by everyone.

To make the pretzels a bit more festive, I sprinkled crushed candy canes on them after they were dipped in both dark and white chocolate.  I placed them in clear bags and tied them with a colorful ribbon.

For hassle free treats, here are some tips when making the pretzel rods:

* Melt chcocolate on a large flat plate so that there is plenty of “rolling room” to cover them with chocolate. Let any extra chocolate drip off the pretzels before adding the crushed candy canes.
* Make sure the candy canes are crushed very fine. If you’d like a little more red, add some colored red sugar to the mixture.
* Rest pretzels on wax paper and do not remove until totally cooled.

Sprinkles, toffee bits, colored sugar or nuts can be substituted for the candy canes. Use your imagination and have some fun. These pretzels can be adapted for Valentine’s Day or any other holiday too.

Chocolate Candy Cane Pretzels

15 to 20 pretzel rods
12 ounces white or dark chocolate, melted
5 candy canes, crushed fine

Dip the pretzel rods in the chocolate but make sure any extra chocolate drips off. Sprinkle with candy canes. Rest on wax paper until completely cooled. Store in a covered container or wrapped in plastic.
