Mummy hot dogs are an easy way to make Halloween dinner a little more fun without adding a complicated recipe to an already busy night. Wrapped in crescent roll dough and finished with silly edible eyes, these air fryer hot dogs are festive enough for a Halloween party but easy enough for a quick dinner before trick-or-treating.

Mummy dogs are perfect Halloween party food as they're just so easy to serve and eat. Everyone can grab a mummy dog, dip it in ketchup, mustard or another favorite sauce and be happy. They cook just as well in the air fryer as they do in the oven, so you can use whichever method works best for your schedule. They're festive without creating extra work on a night that's usually busy enough already.

    Ingredients

Ingredients needed for mummy hot dogs.
    • Crescent rolls – Refrigerated crescent roll dough makes it easy to create thin strips for wrapping the hot dogs. Keep the dough cold until you're ready to work with it so it's easier to cut and handle. A refrigerated crescent dough sheet can also be used if available.
    • Hot dogs – Use your family's favorite hot dogs. Beef, pork, chicken or turkey hot dogs will all work, so choose the type you normally enjoy.
    • Edible eyeballs – Look for candy eyeballs in the baking or cake decorating section, especially during the Halloween season. If you don't have edible eyeballs, small dots of mustard or ketchup can create a simple face instead.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Crescent rolls are sliced into thin strips.
    1. Step 1: Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate it into triangles. Using a knife or pizza cutter, slice each triangle into thin strips (about ¼ inch wide).
Crescent roll strips are wrapped around hot dogs.
    1. Step 2: Take one hot dog and start wrapping it with a crescent roll strip, leaving a small gap for the face. Continue wrapping until the hot dog is covered, resembling a mummy. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs and crescent roll strips.
Crescent roll wrapped hot dogs are placed in the air fryer.
    1. Step 3: Place the wrapped hot dogs in the air fryer basket, making sure they are not touching each other. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes or until the crescent rolls are golden brown and cooked through.
Candy eyes are added to mummy hot dogs.
    1. Step 4: Remove the mummy dogs from the air fryer and let them cool slightly. Place the edible eyeballs in the gap you left for the face. If needed, you can use a tiny bit of mustard or ketchup to help the eyeballs stick. Serve the mummy dogs warm with your favorite dipping sauces like ketchup or mustard.

Hint: These can also be baked in an oven. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the wrapped mummy dogs on the baking sheet and bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown.

    Variations

    • Make them cheesy – Use cheese-filled hot dogs or add a thin strip of cheese alongside the hot dog before wrapping it with crescent dough.
    • Change the hot dogs – Beef, turkey or chicken hot dogs can all be used depending on your family's preference. You can also use smoked sausage or bratwurst. If using brats, you may need to pre-cook before wrapping in dough and air frying.
    • Make mini mummy dogs –Cut the hot dogs into smaller pieces before wrapping them (or use Lil' Smokies) to make bite-sized mummies for a Halloween party or appetizer tray.
    • Skip the candy eyes – Use small dots of mustard or ketchup to make eyes if you don't have edible eyeballs. You can also use small pieces of black olives.
    • Serve them with different dips – Ketchup and mustard are classics, but barbecue sauce, honey mustard or your favorite dipping sauce can make them even more fun.

    Equipment

You'll need an air fryer along with a cutting board and a knife or pizza cutter for slicing the crescent roll dough into narrow strips. Tongs can also be helpful for removing the mummy dogs from the air fryer without disturbing the crescent roll wrapping. I also include oven instructions if you do not own or want to use an air fryer.

    Storage

Store leftover mummy hot dogs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the air fryer until warmed through so the crescent roll dough can crisp back up. The edible eyeballs may soften or melt during reheating, so you may want to remove them first and add fresh ones afterward.

    Top Tips

    • Keep the crescent roll dough refrigerated until you're ready to cut and wrap the hot dogs because cold dough is easier to handle.
    • Cut the crescent dough into thin strips so you can layer and overlap them to create the mummy look.
    • Leave a small section of the hot dog exposed near the top so you have room to add the eyes.
    • Don't worry about making each mummy look perfect. Uneven and overlapping strips make them look more like wrapped mummies.
    • Avoid wrapping the crescent dough in too many layers in one spot so it cooks evenly.
    • Leave space between the hot dogs in the air fryer basket so hot air can circulate and cook the crescent dough evenly.
    • If the bottom of the hot dogs aren't quite as crispy as you'd like them, flip them over for the last few minutes of cooking.
    • Check the mummy dogs toward the end of the cooking time since air fryer models can cook at slightly different rates.

    FAQ

Can I make mummy hot dogs in advance?

You can wrap the hot dogs in crescent roll dough a few hours ahead of time and keep them covered in the refrigerator until you're ready to cook them. Add the edible eyeballs after air frying.

Why isn't the crescent roll dough cooking evenly?

The mummy dogs may be too close together in the air fryer basket, or the strips of dough may be wrapped too thickly in certain areas. Leave some room between each hot dog and use thin strips of dough.

How do I get the edible eyes to stick to the mummy dogs?

Press the eyes gently into the warm crescent dough after cooking. If they don't stick, use a tiny dot of ketchup or mustard to hold them in place.

Can I bake mummy hot dogs in the oven?

Yes. These can be baked in the oven. See the recipe card for full instructions.
