There’s something about homemade basil pesto that instantly makes a meal feel special. With its bright green color, fresh herb flavor, and rich, savory finish, this simple sauce can transform everything from pasta to sandwiches in minutes. If you’ve only ever grabbed a jar from the store, you’re going to love how fresh and vibrant homemade basil pesto tastes when it’s made right in your own kitchen.

My home garden can be hit or miss depending on the rain, the bugs, or whatever else decides to throw me a curveball that season. But basil? It always shows up and does its job. It’s one of my favorite herbs to plant because it grows generously and works in just about everything, from savory appetizers to a fun summer cocktail. When those bright green leaves start piling up, homemade basil pesto is always at the top of my list.

There’s just something about that fresh, herby flavor blended with olive oil, cheese and garlic that makes even the simplest meal feel special. Spoon it over ala dente pasta, swirl it into scrambled eggs, or spread it onto slices of Italian bread and you instantly have something that tastes thoughtful and put together. It’s made with basic ingredients you likely already have on hand, but the flavor is anything but basic.

    Ingredients

Ingredients needed for making homemade pesto.
    • Fresh Basil – Choose bright green leaves with no dark spots or wilting. Wash and dry thoroughly, then remove thick stems before blending. If you’re short on basil, you can replace part of it with fresh spinach or arugula for a slightly different flavor.
    • Olive Oil – Use a good quality extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor since it’s a key component. If you prefer a lighter taste, you can use a mild olive oil or blend olive oil with a neutral oil.
    • Toasted Pine Nuts – Look for fresh nuts that smell sweet and not rancid. If using raw pine nuts, toast them gently in a skillet until lightly golden. Walnuts or almonds can be substituted for a more budget friendly option and a slightly different flavor.
    • Freshly Grated Parmesan – Grate your own from a block for better texture and flavor. Pre-shredded varieties don’t melt or blend as smoothly. Pecorino Romano can be used for a sharper taste.
    • Minced Garlic – Use fresh garlic for the brightest flavor. Mince it finely so it blends evenly. If you want a milder garlic taste, start with less and adjust to preference.
    • Salt – A small amount enhances all the flavors. Taste after blending and adjust as needed. Keep in mind the cheese will add saltiness as well.
    • Pepper – Freshly ground black pepper gives the best flavor. Add more to taste if you like a little extra bite.

See recipe card for exact quantities.

Oil is added to pesto ingredients in a food processor.

    Instructions

    1. Wash and remove the stems from your fresh basil.
    2. Place all ingredients in a food processor, and blend until smooth.
    3. Store in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 1 week.

Hint: Use a good quality olive oil for the best flavor.

    Variations/ Substitutions

    • Swap the Nuts – Use walnuts, almonds, or even pecans in place of pine nuts for a different flavor and a more budget friendly option.
    • Make It Nut Free – Skip the nuts entirely and add a spoonful of sunflower seeds or simply leave them out for a smoother, lighter pesto.
    • Change the Greens – Replace part of the basil with spinach, arugula, or parsley to stretch your herbs or create a slightly different flavor profile. Spinach will be mild while arugula will offer a slightly spicy bite.
    • Try a Different Cheese – Substitute Pecorino Romano for a sharper bite or use Asiago for a milder, creamy finish.
    • Add a Citrus Boost – Stir in a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or a bit of zest to brighten the flavor even more.
    • Make It Dairy Free – Omit the cheese and add a little nutritional yeast for a similar savory note.
    • Turn Up the Heat – Add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little kick.

    Equipment

You’ll need a food processor to get that smooth, creamy texture. A small or standard size food processor works well since this recipe makes about a cup. A sharp knife and cutting board are helpful for prepping the basil and garlic, and a rubber spatula makes it easy to scrape down the sides and get every bit of pesto out of the bowl.

    Storage

Store homemade basil pesto in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. To help prevent browning, smooth the top and pour a thin layer of olive oil over the surface before sealing. You can also press plastic wrap directly onto the pesto to limit air exposure.

To freeze pesto, spoon it into an ice cube tray and freeze until solid, then transfer the cubes to a freezer safe bag or container. This makes it easy to thaw just what you need for pasta, sandwiches, eggs or to toss into soup. Frozen pesto will keep well for up to three months. Thaw in the refrigerator or stir directly into hot dishes straight from the freezer.

    Top Tips

    • Make sure the basil is completely dry before blending so the pesto stays thick and vibrant instead of watery.
    • Toast the pine nuts slowly over medium low heat and stir often so they brown evenly and do not burn.
    • Pulse the ingredients in short bursts instead of running the food processor continuously to help control the texture.
    • Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything blends evenly.
    • Taste and adjust the salt, cheese, or garlic before serving so the flavors are balanced.
    • Add the olive oil gradually if you prefer a thicker pesto and want more control over the consistency.
    • Press a thin layer of olive oil over the top before storing to help keep the color bright and prevent browning.

    Serving Suggestions

Homemade basil pesto is incredibly versatile and can be used in so many easy meals and appetizers. Toss it with gnocchi like in Pesto Cream Gnocchi with Sun-Dried Tomatoes & Peas or drizzle it over Pesto Tortellini Skewers for a simple party bite.

It’s also perfect stirred into Caprese Pesto Pasta Salad or spooned onto Tomato Pesto Caprese Bites. If you need more pasta inspiration, check out How to Cook Tortellini with Recipe Ideas or spread a generous layer onto My Jersey Tomato Sandwich for a fresh, flavorful lunch.

    FAQ

Can I make homemade basil pesto without pine nuts?

Yes. Walnuts, almonds, or even sunflower seeds work well. Each will give the pesto a slightly different flavor, but it will still be delicious.

Why did my pesto turn brown?

Basil oxidizes when exposed to air. To keep it bright green, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface or pour a thin layer of olive oil over the top before storing.

Should pesto be served hot or cold?

It can be used either way. Stir it into warm pasta or spread it onto sandwiches and appetizers straight from the fridge.

    Homemade Basil Pesto

This homemade basil pesto is fresh, vibrant, and easy to make. Perfect for pasta, sandwiches, and weeknight meals.
    Prep Time10 minutes mins
    Course: Sauces and Extras
    Cuisine: Italian
    Servings: 16 servings
    Calories: 82kcal

    Ingredients

    • 2 Cups Fresh Basil
    • ½ Cup Olive Oil
    • ¼ Cup Toasted Pine Nuts
    • ¼ Cup Freshly Grated Parmesan
    • 1 Tablespoon Minced Garlic
    • ¼ Teaspoon Salt
    • ⅛ Teaspoon Pepper

    Instructions

    • Wash and remove the stems from your fresh basil.
    • Place all ingredients in a food processor, and blend until smooth.
    • Store in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 1 week.

    Notes

You can adjust flavors and consistency of the mixture, by adjusting the amounts of the oil or other ingredients, based on preferences.
You can buy already roasted pine nuts but if they are raw, put them in a skillet on medium low heat over the stove. Move the pine nuts around, allowing them to toast, for about 10 minutes making sure not to burn them. The heat will darken their color a bit.
Almonds and walnuts can be used in place of pinenuts for a bit of a different flavor.
This makes one cup of pesto which is equal to about 16 tablespoons.
