    Why Make this Cocktail Recipe?

A night out with friends and cocktails is always fun, but the cost can add up fast, making it harder to do as often as we’d like. That’s why I love bringing the party home instead. These Kamikaze shots are the kind of simple, no-fuss drink that instantly lifts the mood and gets everyone laughing and having a good time without worrying about the tab.

You’ll be surprised at how to make Kamikaze shots. They are so easy to pull together. They have that same bright, citrusy flavor you’d expect from a bartender, but you can make a round in minutes right in your own kitchen. Whether it’s a casual girls’ night or a backyard get-together, this is one of those recipes that makes staying in feel just as fun as going out.

    What is a Kamikaze Shot?

A Kamikaze shot is a classic cocktail shooter known for its bright, citrusy kick and smooth finish. Made with vodka, triple sec, and lime juice, it’s shaken with ice and served cold, often with a lime wedge on the side. The drink traces back to American military bars in Japan after World War II and gained popularity in the 1970s and 80s. It has a crisp, tangy flavor that’s both refreshing and strong, making it a longtime favorite for parties and celebrations.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for how to make kamikaze shots.
    • Vodka – Use a mid-range vodka for the best balance of smoothness and flavor. No need to go top shelf, but avoid the cheapest options for a cleaner finish.
    • Triple Sec – Look for a good-quality orange liqueur for a brighter citrus flavor. You can substitute with Cointreau for a smoother, slightly richer taste.
    • Sweetened Lime Juice – Start with a small amount and adjust to taste. Fresh lime juice with a bit of simple syrup can be used instead for a fresher flavor.
    • Ice – Use fresh, clean ice to avoid any off flavors in the drink.
    • Fresh Lime (Optional Garnish) – Choose limes that feel heavy for their size and have smooth skin for the best juice and presentation.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Vodka is poured into a cocktail shaker.
    1. Step 1: Add ice to a shaker, then the vodka, triple sec, and lime juice. Gently shake for a few seconds.
Kamikaze shots are strained into shot glasses.
    1. Step 2: Pour into shot glasses and garnish with a piece of fresh lime, if desired.

Hint: Chill your shaker and shot glasses ahead of time.

    Variations

    • Sweeter version – Use sour mix instead of lime juice for a sweeter, more approachable shot.
    • Less sweet option – Swap in fresh lime juice instead of sweetened lime juice.
    • Blue Kamikaze – Replace triple sec with Blue Curaçao for a bright blue color and slightly different citrus flavor.
    • Flavored twist – Use flavored vodkas like raspberry or cranberry for a fruity variation.
    • Liqueur swap – Try melon, raspberry, or orange liqueur in place of triple sec for a different flavor profile.
    • Sugared rim – Dip the rim in sugar after moistening with lime for a sweeter finish.

    Equipment

You don’t need much to make these, which is part of what makes them so easy. A basic cocktail shaker is helpful for mixing everything quickly with ice, but a jar with a tight lid works in a pinch. You’ll also want a jigger or small measuring cup for accuracy and a few shot glasses for serving. If you’re adding a garnish, a small knife and cutting board for slicing fresh lime will come in handy.

    Top Tips

    • Chill your shot glasses ahead of time for a smoother drinking experience.
    • Shake gently since this is a quick-mix drink and doesn’t need aggressive shaking.
    • Start with less lime juice and adjust after tasting.
    • Use fresh lime when possible for a brighter flavor.
    • Balance is key, so taste the mixture before pouring to make sure it’s not too sweet or too strong.

    FAQ

Can I make Kamikaze shots ahead of time?

You can mix the ingredients and refrigerate briefly, but they’re best shaken fresh with ice.

Can I serve this as more of a cocktail rather than shots?

Yes, just pour over ice in a small glass instead of dividing into shot glasses. Add a sugared rim to make it even more special.

How to make Kamikaze shots less strong?

Add a splash more lime juice or a bit of sour mix to mellow it out.

    Kamikaze Shots

This classic kamikaze shot recipe hits that perfect balance of citrusy, slightly sweet, and just strong enough to feel like a proper party drink.
    Prep Time5 minutes mins
    Course: alcoholic beverage
    Servings: 4 shots
    Calories: 142kcal

    Ingredients

    • 6 Ounces Vodka
    • 2 Ounces Triple Sec
    • sweetened Lime Juice start with ½ ounce

    Instructions

    • Add ice to a shaker then the vodka, triple sec and lime juice. Gently shake for a few seconds.
    • Pour into shot glasses and garnish with a piece of fresh lime, if desired.

    Notes

Use more or less sweetened lime juice if desired.
Regular lime juice can also be used for less sweetness or use sour mix for a sweeter drink.
Also the rims of the shot glass can be lined with sugar if desired.  Just moisten the outer edge with a lime wedge or water, then dip or roll the rim into a shallow plate of sugar.
For a blue kamikaze shot, replace the triple sec with Blue Curaçao, giving the shot a vibrant blue color.
Your favorite liquor can also be replaced for the triple sec. Try melon, raspberry or  orange liquor.
Try your favorite flavored vodkas for a fruitier shot. I like raspberry and cranberry vodka for a new twist.
