Goat Cheese and Fig Flatbread with Salami is an explosion of flavor in your mouth. Figs and goat cheese provide the perfect combination of sweet and savory and the salami adds a rich salty flavor that's ideal for serving as an appetizer at your next holiday gathering.

    fig - salami flatbread

Figs and Goat Cheese (and Salami?)

Figs and salami? Really? Yes, I say!

Don't knock it before you try it. The combination is divine. We already know that figs and goat cheese go together but add some salami to this recipe and it changes everything!

I have always loved figs and salami. I think it's two foods I remember my grandparents by. My grandfather had a friend who owned a fig tree and there was nothing better than eating them right off the tree. As a kid, my lunch consisted of salami sandwiches when I stayed at their house during summer vacation. These days I don't eat many salami sandwiches but you can count on it being on my Italian hoagie. You can also count on this salty rich meat pairing nicely with some sweet and chewy golden figs.

Several years ago  I was gifted with a wonderful package of luscious dried California figs . I decided to create an appetizer and I couldn't think of a better pairing. I used golden figs because I thought the color was pretty next to the bits of green arugula but any figs will work in this flatbread recipe.

Ingredients Needed for this Fig Flatbread Recipe

    • Olive Oil – Choose a flavorful olive oil that you love as it will add some flavor to the flatbread.
    • Fresh Pizza Dough – You can purchase fresh dough in most grocery stores or from your favorite local pizzaria. You can also purchase premade flatbread.
    • Goat Cheese – This creamy cheese has a slightly tart flavor.
    • Genoa Salami – This flavorful salami is seasoned with garlic, salt and pepper. You'll want to have it sliced very thinly.
    • Arugula – Arugula has a slighlty spicy bite and pairs perfectly with the other flavors to add a bit of freshness.
    • Dried Golden Figs – Fresh figs can be used in season but will not have quite as sweet of a flavor.
    • Feta Cheese – The salty flavor of feta compliments all of the other ingredients.
    • Balsamic Syrup – You can find this in the store or make your own reduction by boiling balsamic vinegar until it is reduced by half.

Steps To Creating Fig and Goat Cheese Flatbread

    1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
    2. Grease two baking pans with some of the olive oil.
    3. Divide pizza dough into two equal portions. Roll each piece into a thin oblong shape. Place each one on a baking sheet and brush with the remaining oil.
    4. Bake for five minutes, piercing the dough if it starts to bubble.
    5. Remove from oven and spread the goat cheese on each flatbread.
    6. Top with salami, arugula and figs. Sprinkle with the feta cheese.
    7. Bake for another 8 to 10 minutes or until crust is golden and cheese starts to melt.
    8. Drizzle with balsamic syrup before cutting into pieces and serving.

Just try making this flatbread.  My husband was a little suspicious when I told him what was on it.  But after trying a piece, he patiently waited to devour the second flatbread after I photographed it. He loved it and now I always make it for holiday parties and gatherings.

    Enjoy!
