Fogo de Chao

The hubby had to have minor eye surgery yesterday and we had to drive into Philadelphia. So to turn a bad trip into a nice trip, we went to lunch at Fogo de Chau after the eye doctor. He just wore sunglasses to cover his eye patch. Fogo de Chau is a upscale Brazilian steakhouse with an unbelievable salad bar, award winning wines and all you can eat meats carved table side. It is not your run of the mill all you can eat buffet. Check out this salad bar. Everything was so fresh!

Of course I loaded my plate with everything but salad. How could I pass up fresh mozzarella cheese, Serrano ham, crispy bread ,green tender asparagus and giant artichoke hearts? Take a look at my plate.

Since it was the afternoon, we skipped the wine and after the salad we were ready to become carnivores. Vegetarians, it is now time for you to leave the room. They had fifteen different cuts of meat including baby lamb chops, fillet Mignon, rib eye, beef and pork ribs and different types of chicken. The gaucho chefs came with skewers of meat and carved it right onto your plate. The best part is that you were given these cute little red and green cards. If you want more food, turn the card to green. To stop the food from coming, use your red side. It was like playing red light, green light. Do you remember that game?

The lamb chops were my favorite and hubby really liked the seasoned top sirloin along with a few other things. Everything was cooked just right. You could get rare or medium as you liked it.

Along with the delicious meats, they brought us some fabulous side dishes. There were rolls that reminded me of cheese popovers. I only had a bite as there was so much other food to eat. The other sides were garlic mashed potatoes, fried polenta and fried bananas. I really didn’t think I would like fried bananas as a side dish but they were phenomenal. The mashed potatoes and fried polenta were great too.

Of course, we had no room for dessert. Luckily our car was parked 6 blocks away. We needed that walk and we wobbled happily back to our car. I highly recommend this place but make sure you are good and hungry before you go.

We have a restaurant like that here, but I haven’t been in forever! I always seem to eat WAY too much!

Allie October 10, 2008 at 1:05 pm

We love Fogo de Chao! It’s like a 2 hour meal of never ending meat. lol Hope the eye recovers quickly.

Adam October 10, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Is there a limit on how long you can stay there. I’d need about an hour for salad, another for the meat… no 2… and then another for sides and dessert.

It would be an all day extravaganva 🙂

Amy October 10, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Yum, Yum!! And…I love your new blog design!!

Lisa, congratulations on your FFF award. Well deserved! You have a beautiful blog and gorgeous photos. Well done my friend.

What a great way to get his mind off the eye. Any surgery is a pain as far as I’m concerned – I so have this hate hate (as opposed to love hate) relationship with doctors. So, when I have to go, I want you with me to take me out someplace just like this.

Jenny October 12, 2008 at 12:44 am

Mmmm, look at all of the fun food here. I’m drooling over here!

Dawn October 12, 2008 at 11:48 am

I have to remember this next time we go to Philly to visit family. It is impossible to find a good salad bars these days. Didn’t they used to be really popular? I remember so many places having really long and good salad bars. Anyone with me?

Tanya October 12, 2008 at 6:23 pm

That sounds so good! My husband would LOVE it! You are so funny though. I always get made fun of for taking pictures of food at restaurants and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who does it!

Paula October 12, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Candy October 13, 2008 at 5:01 am

I’m not big on buffets, but this one looks fantastic!

black eyed susans kitchen October 14, 2008 at 9:41 am

Lisa, We went there last year. It was actually a business dinner. I really enjoyed all of the “sides” and the salads, but, I am not a big meat eater, and fell way behind everyone else. The caiperenas (I am sure that I spelled that wrong!) were a big hit. I am always happy to hear your reviews. Susan

The Brazilian steakhouse trend seems to be catching on everywhere! I love the fact that there are so many tantalizing veggie options…

Rosie October 14, 2008 at 2:58 pm

I went when I was in Chicago! It was great but I felt like I had fallen into a meat coma afterwards, I could barely move…

NatNibbles October 17, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Yum! I’m going to a place similar to that this weekend. I hope it looks as good as that!

The 5 Bickies October 26, 2008 at 9:09 pm

My husband LOVES to go there for lunch. His employees gave him a gift card for Christmas. They all laugh at how much meat he eats. Funny, he never mentioned the great salad bar!

Thanks so much for your review of Fogo de Chao! Judging by your photos and description, they give you a lot of food. Did you know that another location opened up in Baltimore? Too Shy to Stop writer Natasha wrote a review, which you can read here.
